How Do I Get Healthy Nails?

By | November 20, 2013

healthy nailsI need your advice! I want nice looking nails but my cuticles are awful and my nails are weak and don’t grow very fast. I work in a nursing home and all the hand washing and hand sanitizing makes my fingers peel around my nails. What can I do to get them in good shape. I also want to start painting them, any good nail growth stuff that you know of?

I’ve noticed when I paint mine, they break more

Otherwise, I’d get a travel sized lotion and keep it in your pocket. Every time you wash, and just before bed, lotion, paying special attention to the nails and cuticles. I’ve never had nice nails before, but I do this, slather with lotion, and they grow like crazy now (til my kids complain and ask me to cut them off.)

I’d say put more protein in your diet and take hair and nail vitamins, also like pp said use lotion A LOT. I have to do that too, I use palmers cocoa butter HAND lotion in the smaller bottle and I keep it in my purse.

I’ve always had really weak, brittle ones myself. I found taking the hair/nail vitamins helped little, but not dramatically. I found the best polish to use was Nailtiques-formual 2 treatment polish. (http://www.nailtiques.com/Products.asp?CategoryID=1) I got mine for about $2 bucks on clearance at Shopko, but the normal price was about $10, which is a lot cheaper than what they show on their site. It helped my nails grow stronger dramatically. Until my they got stronger, I just applied this everyday without color on top because my nail polish still chipped a lot until my nails got stronger. But within a few months I was able to paint them with regular polish on top.

Sally Hansen Instant Cuticle Remover

I also had the horrible cuticles that seemed big, and would peel. I use Sally Hansen Instant Cuticle Remover. It works great! Also, just in case you don’t know, if you push your cuticles back when they are dry, that can cause peeling. But it sounds like yours are probably just too dry from all the hand washing and hand sanitizing. Have you thought about using your own soap that has moisturizier in it and using an alcohol free hand sanitizer to keep your skin and nails from drying out? I also suggest doing what the other ladies said about using lotion (A thick hand cream preferably). I would also apply it very thickly at night with some moisturizing gloves when you sleep. Sorry for making this so long.

use cuticle oil throughout the day for your cuticles. and take a prenatal vitamin for the growth. Also, use a nail strengthening polish
